EE mobile users are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender have noted a pattern where EE customers are receiving urgent messages warning them of losing significant EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.
Bitdefender issued a warning on Instagram advising users to be cautious when receiving messages claiming that a large number of EE reward points are about to expire soon. According to the experts, such messages are likely part of a scam attempt.
The scam involves cybercriminals posing as the popular EE network to entice individuals into clicking on malicious links that redirect them to fraudulent websites. These deceptive sites are crafted to capture login credentials, enabling the scammers to profit illicitly.
The success of this scam hinges on creating a sense of urgency, leading users to act impulsively without proper consideration. Bitdefender explained that scammers use tight deadlines to create a fear of losing something valuable, manipulating users into clicking on fraudulent links disguised as legitimate EE communications.
It is crucial for EE users to note that authentic alerts from EE will only appear within their official account, not through unsolicited texts. Messages demanding immediate action or featuring countdowns should raise suspicion and be reported by forwarding them to 7726 before deletion.
This type of scam has targeted EE customers previously and resurfaced recently. Users have reported receiving convincing fake messages regarding reward points, with some falling victim to the scam by providing personal information on fake EE websites.
EE has clarified that it does not operate a points program and has shared examples of scam messages circulating, such as false alerts about expiring points as a lure to click on malicious links.
