A Russian legislator ridiculed the United Kingdom and other European nations following the display of a picture featuring Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in the White House. Trump showcased the photo, taken during their summit in Alaska, in a corridor connecting the West Wing to the presidential residence. The image was positioned above another photograph of Trump with his granddaughter at the Daytona International Speedway.
Mark Warner, a Democratic senator from Virginia, criticized the move, stating that it seemed to prioritize Putin over Americans and Trump’s own family. Conversely, in Russia, the gesture was positively received. Russian lawmaker Alexei Zhuravlev remarked that the placement of the photo indicated a level of respect in the relationship between the two leaders, highlighting the absence of images of European leaders or Ukraine’s President Zelensky in the White House.
Zhuravlev suggested that Trump’s action reflected his desire to emulate Putin, known for his territorial acquisitions. However, Zhuravlev noted that Trump had not replicated such achievements in the United States. The legislator also pointed out the perceived stability in Russia, contrasting it with the situation in the US.
The meeting between Putin and Trump in Anchorage, depicted in the framed picture, is considered significant in the context of Russia’s conflict with Ukraine. The event marked Putin’s first visit to a Western nation since the invasion of Ukraine, a moment of such importance that the Kremlin announced it would be included in updated history textbooks.
Zhuravlev made further headlines by commenting on Russia’s use of new hypersonic missiles in strikes on Ukraine, emphasizing the demonstration of advanced military capabilities by the Kremlin. The legislator highlighted the perceived vulnerability of Western capitals and alliance military bases to Moscow’s technological advancements.
