A man nearly faced death after leaving a crowded NHS hospital where a Costa Coffee shop was transformed into a temporary ward due to overwhelming conditions. The incident occurred at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent, where 75-year-old Nick Sheppard disappeared after spending over a day on a trolley in a packed A&E corridor.

He was eventually found in nearby woods, severely dehydrated and suffering from hypothermia. Janet Pott, his partner of over 50 years, expressed deep disappointment in the NHS system, which she believes is under immense strain.

Janet shared the distress she felt during the 44 hours when Nick went missing, coinciding with the hospital’s urgent need to repurpose the Costa Coffee area due to bed shortages. Nick had collapsed in a Co-op supermarket in Dover, leading to a head injury and subsequent hospitalization.

After being placed on a trolley in a corridor for heart tests, Nick vanished while Janet briefly dozed off. Authorities later discovered that he had wandered out through a rear gate, likely disoriented from his head injury. A search was initiated, causing Janet to grapple with feelings of responsibility.

Nick was eventually located 44 hours later in the hospital’s woods, struggling to climb out of a ditch. He spent a significant time in intensive care due to kidney failure, internal bleeding, and significant weight loss.

Both Nick and Janet expressed frustration over the circumstances leading to his injuries and subsequent health issues. Nick, though grateful for the care received, lamented his altered physical state. Janet blamed the incident on overcrowding and inadequate patient monitoring, emphasizing the need for improved healthcare practices.

The East Kent Hospitals Trust issued an apology and announced a review of the incident. NHS data highlighted a record high of 12-hour trolley waits in Kent in 2025, further underscoring the strain on healthcare facilities.
