A young schoolgirl described as ‘incredibly talented’ tragically ended her life after concealing her mental health struggles from her family and therapists, an official inquiry revealed.
Twelve-year-old Laura Louise Spreadbury was discovered in the bathroom of her residence in Great Sankey, Warrington, following a day out with her father, younger sister, and a friend on June 29 last year. Despite her father’s efforts to administer emergency aid, Laura was pronounced dead at Warrington Hospital at 9.04pm.
The coroner for Cheshire, Victoria Davies, ruled the incident as a deliberate act of suicide, highlighting Laura’s reluctance to fully disclose her emotional challenges to professionals and family members.
Before her tragic demise, Laura was actively involved in sports and leadership roles, excelling in rugby and serving as a Scout leader. Her father praised her exceptional abilities, resilience, and high standards she set for herself.
Revealed during the inquiry were instances of Laura engaging in self-harm and expressing suicidal thoughts to her doctor in early 2025, leading to a referral to mental health services. Cognitive behavioral therapy sessions with a therapist revealed Laura’s self-critical nature and struggles with low moods and relationships.
In response to the tragedy, St Gregory’s High School and Warrington Council expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Laura, emphasizing her popularity, humor, sporting prowess, and academic potential within the school community.
