The US State Department has affirmed that Donald Trump’s visa restrictions will not impact the upcoming World Cup games, addressing concerns that fans might face entry denials. Recently, the Trump administration announced a temporary halt on processing immigrant visas from 75 countries to prevent misuse of welfare benefits, thereby restricting visa applications from these nations.

Among the affected countries are Brazil, Colombia, Morocco, and Iran, all of which have qualified for the FIFA World Cup this summer. To clarify, the visa suspension only applies to immigrant visas, not nonimmigrant visas like those for tourists, athletes, media professionals attending the World Cup.

This move is part of a broader immigration policy shift by the Trump administration, aimed at curbing what they perceive as exploitation of the US welfare system. The decision to pause immigrant visa processing for these 75 countries is intended to reevaluate immigration procedures to deter individuals seeking welfare and public benefits.

While the United Kingdom remains unaffected by the visa freeze, activists warn that the overhaul could lead to delays in visa processing at US consulates globally. This could also result in heightened scrutiny for nonimmigrant visa applications from these countries, potentially causing further delays.

Critics argue that the new policy may create a less welcoming atmosphere for fans, with concerns raised about discrimination. Some fans have expressed doubts about the US’s ability to host the World Cup under these circumstances.

Experts view this action as a deliberate effort by the US to limit entry from various countries while preparing to host an international event, sending what they perceive as a hostile message to fans worldwide. In a related development, a special ‘FIFA Pass’ initiative was announced to expedite visa interviews for ticket holders, although it does not guarantee entry into the US.

The US State Department plans to release more details on the FIFA PASS program early this year, emphasizing that having a ticket does not replace the standard visa application process.
