The wrestling world was shaken in 2007 by the tragic murder-suicide involving WWE star Chris Benoit. The 40-year-old former world champion was found dead in his Georgia home along with his wife, Nancy, and their seven-year-old son, Daniel. Benoit strangled his wife, smothered his son, and then took his own life, leaving many puzzled about how a respected athlete could commit such heinous acts.

Investigations into the incident revealed that Benoit had severe chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition associated with repeated head injuries. Experts likened his brain to that of an 80-year-old with Alzheimer’s disease. CTE can lead to erratic behavior, depression, paranoia, and explosive rage.

During his wrestling career spanning over two decades, Benoit endured numerous head injuries that may have contributed to his deteriorating mental state. Friends observed his increasing emotional instability and withdrawal from others.

Text messages sent by Benoit before the tragedy indicated confusion and detachment, symptoms consistent with severe brain trauma. However, experts emphasized that CTE alone does not cause violent behavior, noting that many people with head injuries do not harm others. In Benoit’s case, it might have impaired his impulse control.

Authorities found Nancy’s body with signs of strangulation and Daniel suffocated in his room. Autopsy reports revealed that Daniel had been drugged with Xanax and may have had Fragile X Syndrome, a genetic disorder. Investigators also noted marks on Daniel’s arms suggesting he had been given human growth hormone by Benoit.

Following this devastating event, the wrestling industry implemented stricter concussion protocols and reduced dangerous moves to address the long-term impact of head trauma.
