Caroline Wozniacki defended Emma Raducanu against John Isner’s comments questioning the significance of Raducanu’s remarkable US Open victory compared to other recent tennis upsets. Raducanu, a British sensation, made history in 2021 by becoming the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.

The 23-year-old, then a teenager, showcased an impressive performance by winning 10 consecutive matches without dropping a set to secure the championship in a thrilling final against Leylah Fernandez.

Another surprise in the tennis world occurred recently when Valentin Vacherot, the lowest-ranked player ever, clinched a Masters title in Shanghai. Vacherot defeated top players like Novak Djokovic on his way to the title, prompting Isner to argue that Vacherot’s accomplishment overshadowed Raducanu’s Grand Slam triumph.

Isner, a retired American player, expressed his belief that Vacherot’s victory was more improbable given his limited success prior to the tournament. However, Wozniacki disagreed with Isner’s assessment, asserting that winning a Grand Slam title holds more significance than any other achievement in tennis.

Wozniacki, a former Australian Open champion who retired in 2022 but returned to the sport in 2023, emphasized the prestige of winning a Grand Slam. Despite giving birth to her third child, Wozniacki continued to compete in various tournaments, including the US Open and the Paris Olympics.

On the other hand, Raducanu has not replicated her US Open success since that memorable night in New York. She admitted to struggling with comparisons to her past achievements, acknowledging that the pressure to live up to her earlier triumph still lingers.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Raducanu discussed the challenges of handling the legacy of her US Open win and her decision to forgo therapy despite facing unique experiences in her career. She emphasized the importance of self-reliance in navigating the complexities of her journey as a professional athlete.
