As the new year unfolds, a wave of freezing temperatures sweeps across Britain, posing challenges for many individuals in terms of skin care. Dr. Donald Grant, a seasoned GP and senior clinical advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, has imparted valuable insights on safeguarding skin in harsh weather conditions, especially beneficial for those grappling with skin issues like eczema.

Dr. Grant emphasized the detrimental impact of cold winter weather on our skin due to plummeting temperatures and reduced humidity levels leading to dry air that depletes skin moisture. He outlined eight effective strategies to shield our skin from the harsh effects of the cold climate.

One key recommendation from Dr. Grant is to opt for warm or lukewarm water instead of hot water when bathing to prevent the skin from losing essential oils. Choosing a moisturizer designed for cold and dry conditions containing lipids such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid is advised to nourish and safeguard the skin.

For individuals with severely dry skin, Dr. Grant suggested using an emollient moisturizer to lock in moisture followed by another moisturizer. Incorporating a hydrating serum before applying moisturizer can help hydrate and soothe the skin using natural oils.

To maintain skin health, Dr. Grant advised against using facial cleansers with harsh chemicals that dry out the skin, recommending soothing milky lotion cleansers instead. Limiting the use of toners, gentle exfoliation with a chemical exfoliant, and ensuring adequate hydration through herbal teas or warm water intake are vital during the colder months.

As sunlight exposure decreases in winter, Dr. Grant recommended considering vitamin D supplements like Vitabiotics Ultra Vitamin D 1000 IU Tablets to compensate for the shortfall. Staying vigilant about skin changes, mole appearances, or growth alterations is crucial for early detection of potential skin issues.

Despite the chilly weather, Dr. Grant stressed the importance of applying sunscreen to protect the skin from sun damage even in winter. Regular application of sunscreen on exposed areas like the face and hands, along with reapplication when spending extended periods outdoors, is essential for skin protection.

Dr. Grant, a respected GP with extensive experience dating back to his medical qualification in Bristol in 1985, brings a wealth of expertise to his role as a senior clinician at The Independent Pharmacy, focusing on orthopaedic medicine. By following these recommendations, individuals can maintain healthy and vibrant skin throughout the cold season, ensuring optimal skin health and protection against external elements.
