An urgent alert has been issued to Windows 10 users, emphasizing the imminent end of support for the operating system by Microsoft in 2025. With just a few weeks left until the deadline, the US tech giant has issued a critical warning.

Microsoft’s website update highlighted that Windows 10 will reach the end of servicing on October 14, 2025. The last monthly security update will be available in October 2025, after which devices running Windows 10 will no longer receive essential security updates to guard against the latest cyber threats.

For users still using Windows 10, the recommendation is clear: upgrade to Windows 11 promptly or enroll in Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates program, ensuring the continued smooth operation of PCs for the next three years.

Failure to take action leaves your computer vulnerable to cyber attacks and software bugs. Microsoft will not provide Windows 10 with any new features, unlike Windows 11.

To prepare for the Windows 10 deadline, here are the essential steps:

1. **Upgrade to Windows 11:** Upgrading to Windows 11 is a straightforward process for users with compatible PCs. Microsoft offers free updates, making it easy to follow the instructions and transition smoothly. Alternatively, new laptops come with Windows 11 pre-installed, though purchasing a new laptop can be costly.

2. **Stick with Windows 10:** If opting to stay with Windows 10, consider signing up for Microsoft’s Extended Updates (ESUs). While ESUs do not introduce new features, they ensure ongoing protection against known security threats and bugs. Microsoft charges $30 (£24) per year for ESU enrollment, providing “Critical and Important security updates” for Windows 10.

In response to the transition period, Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President, Consumer Chief Marketing Officer at Windows, mentioned the ESU program for personal use. This one-year option will be available for $30 closer to the end of support in 2025.

Continuing to use Windows 10 after the deadline won’t render the system inoperable, but it exposes the PC to potential security risks, making it an unadvisable choice.
