In some cases, these cybercriminals lock out the genuine user, preventing them from alerting others about the compromised account.
Typically, these attacks start with a request for the activation code of the account, which is then exploited to gain unauthorized access.
Action Fraud is offering crucial guidance and three key rules to prevent falling victim to such incidents.
“Safeguard your WhatsApp account against hackers,” stated Action Fraud in a post on X (formerly Twitter ).
“We are observing an increase in reports of WhatsApp account takeovers.”
The cybersecurity team emphasizes the importance of verifying WhatsApp accounts and ensuring that two-step verification is activated. This feature prevents unauthorized access unless verified on an additional device, enabling users to detect and prevent fraudulent login attempts promptly.
To enable this security measure, users can navigate to Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Enable within the WhatsApp application.
Additionally, it is crucial to remember a simple rule: never share any code sent to your phone.
“Avoid disclosing your account activation code (the 6-digit code received via SMS),” advised Action Fraud.
As previously mentioned, once hackers obtain this code, they can attempt unauthorized access to the application and initiate deceptive communications.
Lastly, users are urged to STOP. THINK. CALL. Action suggests that if a family member or friend makes an unusual request on WhatsApp, it is wise to contact the individual directly to confirm their identity. This caution stems from the persistent threat of the “Hi mum” scam, designed to defraud unsuspecting acquaintances.
It is estimated that online fraudsters have already received substantial amounts of money through this deceitful tactic.
