U.S. Vice-President JD Vance shared his thoughts on the recent trade agreement with Canada during a fundraising event on Wednesday. Vance mentioned that Prime Minister Mark Carney attempted to appear tougher than U.S. President Donald Trump, while also acknowledging Conservative MP Jamil Jivani for supporting Canada.

Vance described Carney as a friendly person but criticized his attempt to outshine Trump. He highlighted that behind the scenes, Jivani, a Canadian MP with a good relationship with the U.S., played a significant role in advocating for Canada.

Regarding the Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, Vance dismissed him as a minor figure in the trade negotiations. He emphasized the importance of the deal and the involvement of various individuals in the process.

The White House and the vice-president’s office did not provide any comments on the matter. The trade deal announcement by Trump included a temporary delay in imposing new tariffs on Canadian products, following discussions with Carney and intensive bilateral negotiations.

Trump expressed satisfaction with the agreement, stating it benefits both countries. Reports indicated that the deal involves reducing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles, with Canada agreeing to certain conditions.

Vance highlighted that the goal of the negotiations was to influence Canada’s behavior positively, aligning more with Trump’s approach. He mentioned that the relationship between the two countries had faced challenges in the past, leading to tensions and threats.

Jivani’s involvement in the negotiations was commended by Vance, who noted Jivani’s effective advocacy in specific areas of mutual benefit. The longstanding friendship between Vance and Jivani, dating back to their time at Yale, was also highlighted.

Jivani’s efforts to engage with the Trump administration have stirred controversy within the Canadian Conservative Party, particularly with Poilievre advocating for tariff-free agreements. The dynamics within the party surrounding Jivani’s actions have been a point of contention.

Jivani’s office did not respond immediately to requests for comments, indicating the ongoing debate within the party regarding the trade negotiations and the differing perspectives on handling the situation.
