Helmut Marko shared that Max Verstappen expressed sadness upon hearing about the veteran Austrian’s forthcoming departure from Red Bull. Marko also suggested that the four-time Formula 1 World champion could leave the team if the desired supportive environment for success is not maintained.
At 82 years old, Marko is set to conclude his advisory role after 20 years with the team, where he oversaw the junior driver program and played a pivotal role in bringing Verstappen onboard, despite competition from Mercedes.
The strong bond between the two was evident during internal tensions at Red Bull last year, with Verstappen publicly supporting Marko and even hinting at a potential departure if Marko were to leave, referring to him as a ‘second father’.
In an interview with Austrian publication Kleine Zeitung, Marko recounted Verstappen’s reaction to the news, highlighting their shared memorable moments and achievements. Marko clarified that Verstappen, despite his previous warning, has accepted the situation and fans need not worry about the champion’s future with the team.
However, Marko emphasized that for Verstappen, a harmonious environment is crucial for success, and any deviation from that could prompt an abrupt departure. While Marko’s exit was officially portrayed as his own decision by Red Bull GmbH, reports suggest ongoing tensions with senior management, exacerbated by public remarks and contractual issues.
Despite rumors and media reports, Marko refuted claims of unauthorized actions and emphasized that they were baseless speculations.
