US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to hold discussions with Danish representatives regarding President Donald Trump’s proposal to acquire Greenland. Rubio mentioned to the press today that the meeting is scheduled for next week.
This development follows confirmation from the White House indicating Trump’s interest in “taking over” Greenland before the end of his term. While Trump reportedly prefers a purchase agreement with Denmark, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the President is prepared to consider military options if Denmark rejects the offer.
Leavitt emphasized that Trump views obtaining Greenland as a critical national security objective for the United States, essential for deterring adversaries in the Arctic region. The administration is exploring various strategies to achieve this foreign policy goal, with military intervention being an available option.
The recent tensions arose as Trump faced criticism from European leaders over his pursuit of Greenland, with Denmark cautioning that such a territorial acquisition could jeopardize the NATO alliance. In response, Trump took to Truth Social to assert that NATO might not support the US when needed, despite NATO’s past invocation of its collective defense clause in support of the US after the 9/11 attacks.
In his social media post, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Norway, a NATO member, for not awarding him the Nobel Prize. He also suggested that China and Russia would not fear NATO without American involvement. However, he reiterated the US commitment to NATO, stating, “We will always be there for NATO, even if they won’t be there for us.”
