I recently returned from providing essential assistance to emergency responders and labor union members in the Donbas area of Ukraine. Despite facing daily challenges such as power outages, missile attacks, and civilian casualties, the Ukrainian people exhibit remarkable resilience. They desire peace but refuse to surrender their nation to Russia and the harsh conditions of occupation.

During my visit to the Save Ukraine center, I encountered children who had been rescued from the occupied territories. Shockingly, one out of every ten children had experienced sexual abuse. Over 20,000 children have been reported missing due to Russian actions, indicating a pervasive issue of child exploitation.

A concerning situation has arisen where sanctioned Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is impeding the transfer of £2.5 billion from the sale of Chelsea FC for Ukrainian aid while embroiled in a legal dispute over frozen assets in Jersey, with the support of a member of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet, Lord Wolfson KC. Lord Wolfson, the Shadow Attorney General, representing Abramovich alongside former Trump advisor Eric Herschmann, raises alarms about the normalization of ties with Russian oligarchs.

This legal entanglement cannot be viewed in isolation, given the ongoing crises in Ukraine. As populist and far-right leaders worldwide seek closer relations with Moscow, the need for accountability and decisive action is paramount. The failure to address Lord Wolfson’s association with a sanctioned oligarch questions the ethics of the current Tory leadership under Kemi Badenoch.

In response, the Labour government must act decisively by introducing emergency measures to prevent sanctioned oligarchs from exploiting the UK legal system and transferring the nearly £30 billion in frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine. Solidarity with Ukraine is crucial as they fight for democracy on the frontlines.

To voice support for Ukraine, a rally is planned outside Tory Headquarters on Wednesday, January 7, at 5 pm. It is essential to stand in solidarity with Ukraine and demand accountability in this critical situation.
