The Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom emphasized that the fate of Greenland rests solely with Greenlanders and Danes, excluding any external interference. Concerns arose following statements by US President Donald Trump hinting at a potential annexation of Greenland for national security reasons.

While the White House has previously shown interest in the territory, Trump’s recent comments during the Venezuela operation reignited the discussion. In a parliamentary address, the UK official underscored that Greenland is under the Kingdom of Denmark’s jurisdiction, emphasizing the importance of respecting Denmark’s sovereignty.

British politicians, including Keir Starmer, echoed support for Denmark’s stance, emphasizing that decisions regarding Greenland should be made by the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland alone. Former Chancellor Jeremy Hunt warned that any move to annex Greenland could severely strain the NATO alliance, urging European leaders to stand firm against such actions.

Starmer also stressed the need for a peaceful transition to democracy in Venezuela following recent events, labeling Maduro as illegitimate. The UK government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of British citizens in Venezuela, advising them to stay put and review departure options due to potential safety risks.
