In the UK, a growing number of households are turning to modified Fire TV Sticks for accessing premium content like Sky Sports and movies at a fraction of the cost. These altered devices are widely available online and even offer free access to TV shows and boxsets.
The popularity of these adapted Fire TV Sticks has raised concerns among official providers like Sky. Sky’s chief operating officer, Nick Herm, mentioned that many people are aware of these jailbroken Fire Sticks, which allow users to access pirated services easily.
Despite the issue, Amazon, the seller of Fire TV Sticks, bears no responsibility for the unauthorized use of its devices. Amazon legally sells Fire TV Sticks with official apps like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video pre-installed. The problem arises when users sideload unofficial applications that enable illegal streaming.
Amazon has recently introduced a new Fire TV Stick model called the 4K Select, which is more affordable and offers high-quality 4K visuals. This new device operates on the Vega operating system instead of Amazon’s Fire OS. Notably, the 4K Select only allows approved software from Amazon’s marketplace, potentially preventing the use of unofficial applications for illegal streaming.
Amazon has confirmed that only apps from its Appstore on Fire TV can be downloaded for enhanced security. While this change won’t affect existing Fire TV Sticks with unauthorized apps, it could deter illegal streaming on future devices.
