A television host is urging for a complete prohibition on fireworks following an unfortunate incident during New Year’s that resulted in severe injuries for her. Andrea Plewig, aged 55 and known for hosting the show “Astro Royal,” was hospitalized after a firework she ignited at home malfunctioned, leading to the loss of her left eye.

Recalling the event, Plewig mentioned how she meticulously handled the fireworks, ensuring safety measures were in place. “I unpacked the fireworks, prepared the fuses, and had a flashlight handy. The children were kept at a safe distance,” she recounted.

However, a rocket unexpectedly launched prematurely, striking her eye and causing immense pain, resulting in her collapse.

The mishap occurred shortly after Plewig had completed an intensive chemotherapy regimen following a breast cancer diagnosis. Despite efforts by medical professionals, her injured eye could not be saved. Subsequently, Plewig is actively advocating for stricter regulations concerning personal fireworks usage and is endorsing the “No To Fireworks” campaign.

In the United Kingdom, this movement is supported by various organizations such as The Firework Campaign UK, the RSPCA, and Help for Heroes. Supporters are pushing for more stringent laws to reduce the negative effects of fireworks on animals, veterans, and vulnerable individuals. Proposed measures include banning public sales, lowering noise levels, and restricting pyrotechnic displays to licensed public events.

Similar initiatives worldwide have garnered significant support, with approximately 200 ongoing petitions in the UK alone, some amassing up to 190,000 backers.

Expressing her stance, Plewig emphasized the necessity of a complete ban on fireworks, citing their hazardous nature and the unforeseen repercussions on both humans and the environment, including animals.

Her close friend and fellow TV personality, Vera Int-Veen, aged 58, expressed shock at the incident, affirming unwavering support for Plewig during this challenging period. “Our entire group of friends stood by Andrea through her cancer battle in the past year and a half and continues to support her during this trying time,” Vera stated.

While Plewig has recently been given a clean bill of health following her breast cancer treatment, she still requires surgical intervention. Her call for stricter legislation on fireworks underscores persisting concerns regarding the dangers associated with private pyrotechnic usage, particularly in residential settings.
