Many individuals tend to discard their leftover coffee grounds without realizing their potential to address a common issue. While most people turn to store-bought solutions for various daily problems, experts suggest that a simple yet effective remedy may already exist within their kitchens, as per a viral TikTok by Neighbourhood Coffee Roasters in Liverpool.

If your refrigerator occasionally emits unpleasant odors, a quick solution could be at hand in your own home. In a video, a woman demonstrates placing a small cup of used coffee grounds in the fridge to combat lingering smells from foods like cheese, fish, or leftovers. This method involves placing the grounds in an open container inside the fridge.

Experts explain the science behind this practice. Studies in Food Science and Technology reveal that the nitrogen and organic compounds in used coffee grounds can absorb and trap odor molecules similar to baking soda.

This natural deodorizing property of coffee grounds, as highlighted by sustainability experts, stems from their porous structure, enabling them to absorb specific compounds in the air that cause unpleasant smells.

The utilization of coffee grounds for this purpose not only serves as a deodorizer but also contributes to addressing the substantial waste issue associated with coffee. Recycling Magazine notes that the UK alone discards over 500,000 tonnes of coffee grounds annually, leading to potential methane emissions in landfills, a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide.

On a global scale, millions of tonnes of used coffee grounds are disposed of each year worldwide, despite containing valuable nutrients and compounds. Neighbourhood Coffee’s video also suggests alternative uses for coffee grounds, such as composting them for soil enrichment and using them as a natural fertilizer for plants.

Additionally, the gritty texture of coffee grounds can serve as a gentle cleaning scrub for surfaces or be incorporated into skincare scrubs for exfoliation. Therefore, reconsidering the disposal of coffee grounds after your morning brew can help maintain a fresh-smelling fridge while contributing to waste reduction.
