Encounters between Donald Trump and other world leaders have been notably dramatic since he took office. However, in 2025, official diplomatic interactions reached new levels of formality.

At a NATO pre-summit briefing in The Hague, Trump made a striking comparison, likening the tensions between Iran and Israel to a situation of children in a schoolyard. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte then made a noteworthy comment, referring to Trump as “Daddy” and suggesting the need for strong language at times.

Trump seemed unperturbed by the nickname, later expressing his belief that Rutte liked him and jokingly mentioning that he would hit back if not. The White House’s social media team capitalized on the moment by sharing a clip from Trump’s visit to the Netherlands set to Usher’s song ‘Hey Daddy’.

Rutte also commended Trump’s efforts in engaging with President Putin to address the Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasizing the crucial role of the American president in breaking the deadlock.

In a surprising turn of events, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer extended a rare second state visit invitation to Trump on behalf of King Charles III. Trump, taken aback momentarily, graciously accepted the invitation, praising the UK as a fantastic country.

During a visit to the US, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed solidarity with Trump in supporting Ukraine and adapting his slogan, aiming to “Make the West Great Again” together.

Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado presented Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize as a gesture of mutual respect, which Trump acknowledged on social media.

While some leaders, like Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, have praised Trump’s transformative leadership, they have also asserted their nation’s independence and principles.

Trump’s penchant for complimenting leaders on their appearance was evident in his interactions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, showcasing his affinity for flattery.

Political analysts, including former US ambassador Ivo Daalder, suggest that appealing to Trump’s ego and portraying him as a winner play a significant role in gaining his favor in international dealings.
