The Winter Olympics kick off with a grand ceremony at Milan’s renowned San Siro Stadium on Friday. Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli are set to perform, captivating millions of viewers as they await the appearance of a promising British team filled with young talent. UK Sport anticipates a potential medal haul of up to eight for Team GB in Italy.

Spanning across northern Italy, the 25th edition of the winter games will be celebrated with festivities and processions in Predazzo, Livigno, and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Team GB is expected to surpass its previous medal records, with a current record of five medals achieved in Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018. Ice skating duo Lewis Gibson and Lilah Fear, often compared to Torvill and Dean, stand out as potential medalists after their impressive third-place finish at the world championships last year.

Lilah Fear, the 26-year-old ice dancer, expressed overwhelming joy and pride upon being selected as the flagbearer for the opening ceremony alongside bobsleigh pilot Brad Hall. Meanwhile, Britain’s curling teams are poised to build upon their success from 2022, with the women securing a gold medal in the previous games. Noteworthy contenders also include skeleton athletes Matt Weston and Marcus Wyatt, who are among the best in the world.

Among the leading medal hopefuls are Mia Brookes, Kirsty Muir, Zoe Atkin, and Charlotte Bankes, all vying for Team GB’s first gold or silver medal on snow. The competition, running until Feb 22, features nearly 3,000 athletes from 90 nations competing for 116 medals at Milan-Cortina. With 53 athletes representing Team GB and qualifying events already underway, expectations are high for a successful campaign.

Notable events to watch include Weston and Tabby Stoecker in the mixed team event, Brad Hall’s bobsleigh competitions, and potential curling successes with Team Mouat and Team Morrison. Athletes like Weston, Atkin, Bankes, Brookes, Muir, Fear, and Gibson are all poised to showcase their skills and compete for top honors in their respective disciplines throughout the games.
