A recent survey by Deltapoll for The Mirror indicates that a significant majority of individuals in the UK would support rejoining the European Union in a hypothetical second Brexit referendum. The survey found that 58% of potential voters would opt to return to the EU. Notably, support for reversing Brexit was particularly strong among the younger demographic, with 86% of 18 to 24-year-olds favoring rejoining the bloc.

The survey also highlighted that Conservative and Reform party supporters tended to back the current status quo, with 66% and 82% respectively opposing rejoining the EU. In contrast, a significant majority of Labour and Liberal Democrat backers, at 71% and 78% respectively, expressed a desire to rejoin the European Union.

Geographically, support for returning to the EU was widespread across the UK, with Scotland showing the highest approval at 73%, followed by London and Wales at 65%. While the Midlands and the North had slightly lower support levels at 53% and 54% respectively, residents in those regions still leaned towards rejoining the EU.

Acknowledging the public sentiment, Keir Starmer has been actively working to mend the UK’s relationship with Europe, culminating in a recent trade deal with Brussels. Additionally, the UK government’s decision to rejoin the Erasmus+ program signifies a step towards fostering closer ties with European partners.

Despite the growing calls for closer alignment with the EU, the Prime Minister’s spokesperson reiterated that rejoining the single market and customs union are non-negotiable “red lines” for the government. This stance aims to balance strengthening ties with the EU while maintaining key principles set forth during Brexit negotiations.

In response to the survey findings, Naomi Smith from the campaign group Best for Britain emphasized the public’s disillusionment with Brexit and the increasing importance of reliable European partnerships. Smith highlighted the opportunity for the UK to demonstrate its trustworthiness as a neighbor, potentially paving the way for closer relationships with the Customs Union, Single Market, or even reentry into the EU itself.
