One year into my role as Policing Minister, I am proud to report significant progress in our fight against knife crime. Through collaborative efforts between the Home Office and law enforcement, we are witnessing a decline in knife-related incidents, saving lives and enhancing community safety.
Concrete actions, not just rhetoric, have driven this transformation. Strategic enforcement and prevention measures in high-risk areas have led to a remarkable 15% reduction in knife robberies since June 2024. This equates to nearly 2,500 fewer robberies, marking a substantial improvement from the previous upward trend.
The establishment of a dedicated anti-knife robbery group in seven heavily impacted police forces has been instrumental in achieving these results. By leveraging targeted policing strategies supported by data analysis, we are proactively shielding communities and thwarting potential violence.
Our County Lines Programme has also yielded remarkable outcomes. By dismantling numerous drug networks that fuel knife crime and exploit vulnerable youths, we have shut down over 3,000 lines, made more than 8,200 arrests – including charging 1,600 line operators – and confiscated around 1,000 knives. Beyond these figures lie transformed lives, with over 4,300 at-risk individuals referred for protection and over 600 children receiving assistance through our partnership with Catch22.
The impact of these interventions is evident, with a 25% drop in hospital admissions for stabbings in areas associated with high drug trafficking volumes. Furthermore, hospitalizations due to drug misuse have significantly decreased, offering hope to families and communities.
Our success is not coincidental but the result of evidence-based strategies. Initiatives like knife surrender programs have encouraged individuals to relinquish weapons, leading to the removal of nearly 60,000 knives from circulation. Additionally, our innovative Hex mapping technology identifies localized knife crime hotspots, enabling more effective policing and targeted interventions in collaboration with local stakeholders.
Violence Reduction Units are actively engaging with families and schools to steer youth away from criminal activities, while over 50 Young Futures Panel initiatives are proactively safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
Listening to the voices of those impacted by these heinous crimes, we have implemented Ronan’s Law, championed by Pooja Kanda, which enhances penalties for offenders and safeguards victims. Heightened age verification procedures for online knife sales are closing loopholes exploited by criminals, and consultations on a licensing scheme to restrict knife access to criminals and youths are underway.
While the battle against knife crime continues, the progress of the past year exemplifies the power of collective action. Every surrendered knife, closed County Line, and safeguarded child signifies saved lives and secured futures. We have shifted the trajectory from rising knife crime to a declining trend, and our resolve remains unwavering until serious violence is eradicated, and every young person is offered a path to a safer tomorrow.
