Keir Starmer engaged in discussions with Volodymyr Zelensky today as the Ukrainian leader geared up for important in-person talks with Donald Trump. The meeting between the US President and Mr. Zelensky at Mar-a-Lago in Florida is anticipated to focus on resolving the nearly four-year conflict between Moscow and Kyiv. Prior to this encounter, Mr. Trump announced on Truth Social that he had a productive phone call with the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin.

Arriving in Florida, Mr. Zelensky conversed with Mr. Starmer, who has been collaborating with European allies to form a Coalition of the Willing. This coalition of nations is committed to overseeing any peace agreement established between Moscow and Kyiv. Expressing gratitude for the ongoing coordination, Mr. Zelensky shared his morning discussions with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, detailing preparations for the upcoming meeting with President Trump and interactions with European partners. He emphasized the importance of the United Kingdom’s support and pledged to maintain communication.

A statement from Downing Street confirmed that the UK Prime Minister spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reiterating the UK’s steadfast backing for Ukraine and its pursuit of a just and enduring peace. Both leaders condemned Russia’s aggressive and unlawful invasion, including the recent assault on Kyiv. They hailed diplomatic efforts and praised President Trump’s involvement in securing peace, agreeing to maintain close communication in the days ahead.

Mr. Zelensky, following discussions with European leaders, urged continued pressure on Russia to face the consequences of their aggression, highlighting ongoing attacks on Ukrainian territories. He disclosed that during the Christmas week, over 2,100 drones, around 800 guided aerial bombs, and 94 missiles were launched by the Kremlin, targeting Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. Despite recent attacks in Kyiv resulting in casualties and power outages, Mr. Zelensky emphasized the need for international support to counter Russian aggression.

As Mr. Zelensky journeyed to Florida, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov alleged that Kyiv and European influencers were unprepared for constructive dialogue, insinuating a willingness to engage in conflict with Russia. In anticipated high-level discussions with President Trump, the leaders are set to explore a 20-point proposal aimed at resolving the conflict. Mr. Zelensky has indicated that a peace plan is near completion, with discussions expected to cover economic agreements, territorial issues, and security guarantees akin to NATO’s Article 5.

The peace plan, which includes commitments from the US, particularly regarding collective military response in case of an attack on Ukraine, is still in the negotiation phase. Sensitivity surrounds territorial concessions, a key aspect to be addressed during the upcoming talks between the two leaders.
