Despite the widespread use of the major mobile network providers such as EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, a recent report by consumer group Which? indicates that these industry giants are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. The findings of Which?’s latest mobile ranking, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, reveal that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.
The survey aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which are not. It highlighted that the conventional “Big Four” – EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone – are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of service quality and affordability.
Leading the rankings were Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY, indicating their strong performance in customer satisfaction and value offerings. Among the major providers, EE secured the highest ranking at ninth place, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.
Price emerged as a significant factor in the report, with customers on the Big Four paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only plan, notably higher than the £9 average spent by users of smaller networks. However, the report clarified that lower prices do not equate to poorer coverage, as many smaller providers utilize the infrastructure of major networks, ensuring comparable signal and service quality without the premium price tag associated with well-known brands.
The report also highlighted the ease of switching between providers, noting that some customers could complete the switch in as little as 10 minutes. One Which? member shared their positive experience of switching from O2 to SMARTY, saving around £200 annually by opting for a more cost-effective plan.
Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized the consistent outperformance of smaller providers in customer service and affordability compared to major mobile firms. She encouraged customers nearing the end of their contracts and seeking better value to consider switching to providers offering superior service and cost savings.
