Russian politician Dmitry Rogozin has ridiculed the UK for deploying only one military personnel to safeguard Greenland. This taunt coincided with Europe dispatching a 30-member force to the world’s largest island due to apprehensions that US President Donald Trump might seize the NATO-controlled territory by force. Rogozin humorously speculated whether the lone British officer dispatched to Greenland was the famed fictional spy James Bond, also known as 007.
Expressing disdain, Rogozin, a staunch ally of Vladimir Putin and a proponent of military actions, remarked that while facing Putin and Russia, a significant military force is deemed necessary, including weaponry, armor, artillery, substantial budgets, and international agreements. However, in the case of Trump and the US, a mere 30 individuals were sent, indicating a lack of seriousness. Rogozin emphasized Europe’s belief that Trump is far less formidable than Putin, suggesting that the US leader would back down in the face of this small group.
Furthermore, Rogozin insinuated that Britain’s contribution to Greenland’s defense was minimal, comparing it unfavorably to the involvement of other European nations. He humorously speculated about the gender composition of the 30-person force, suggesting that the British representative may be accompanied by “29 girls” in reference to James Bond’s fictional romantic interests.
The multinational force consisted of 15 French, 13 Germans, 2 Norwegians, and a sole representative from the UK. Rogozin, known for his anti-Western sentiments, is a Russian senator appointed by Putin to allegedly represent part of Ukraine. He previously served as a deputy prime minister, led the Russian Space Agency, and represented the Kremlin at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
Rogozin also raised concerns about Trump’s intentions regarding Greenland, warning that the US might aim to deploy intercontinental missiles beneath the island’s ice cover, potentially sparking catastrophic consequences. He cautioned that such actions could lead to a dangerous escalation of nuclear capabilities between the US, Russia, and China, ultimately triggering global devastation.
