Russia launched a heavy aerial assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and its surrounding areas with numerous missiles and drones during a nighttime attack that lasted for several hours, resulting in the death of at least 16 individuals, according to officials on Thursday.
The Russian forces have escalated their ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv in recent months, taking advantage of Ukraine’s limited supply of U.S.-made Patriot air defense interceptors, which are the only weapons capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in its arsenal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged other countries to provide more Patriot interceptors, but global stockpiles are depleted due to the conflict in Iran and Ukraine’s ongoing battle against Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The overnight assault by Russia also included cruise missiles and high-speed jet-powered drones, further challenging Ukraine’s air defenses, as reported by the Ukrainian air force.
Explosions reverberated throughout the city during the dark night, with Kyiv being the primary target; however, hits were recorded at 28 locations across the country. Zelenskyy stated that around 40 individuals were injured, and air raid alerts remained in effect until after daybreak.
Describing the attack as massive, Zelenskyy commented on social media that Russia had meticulously planned the assault over a long period, utilizing various types of missiles and drones to inflict maximum damage on civilian infrastructure.
In response to the attack, neighboring countries and allies have ramped up their military activities. Poland activated its military aviation operations and air defense systems, while NATO aircraft were deployed to monitor Polish airspace. Romania reported the crash of an unidentified drone near its border with Ukraine.
The Ukrainian desire for missile defense systems remains a challenge, with a significant drop in U.S. Patriot inventory levels since the conflict began. Lockheed Martin’s efforts to increase interceptor production capacity aim to address this gap, but the process takes time.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has tested the patience of NATO and its partners, leading to violations of neighboring states’ sovereignty and escalating risks beyond Ukraine, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
The overnight strikes on Kyiv caused significant damage to residential buildings and infrastructure in several districts, prompting emergency crews to rescue trapped individuals. The assault also resulted in fires and trapped residents in various buildings and schools.
As both Russia and Ukraine engage in drone and missile attacks, their armies continue to struggle for dominance along the 1,250-kilometer front line, with a large number of drones keeping troops engaged on both sides.
