A recent survey by Halifax focusing on the quality of life for children has identified the prime residential locations in the UK for families. The survey highlighted various aspects such as job opportunities, housing sizes, internet connectivity, traffic conditions, and overall happiness of adults. Surprisingly, a majority of the top places were found to be located in Scotland, with some representation from both the northern and southern regions of England, yet the top three spots were all secured by Scottish areas.
For several consecutive years, the Orkney Islands in Scotland have maintained their position as the most desirable place to raise a family in the UK. The survey praised Orkney for its high employment rates, low crime levels, exceptional academic achievements, and small class sizes in primary schools.
James Stockan, the leader of the Orkney Islands council, expressed delight over the 2019 results, emphasizing the community’s blend of traditional values with a modern and ambitious mindset that contributes to making Orkney an exceptional place to reside and work.
Situated north of mainland Scotland, the Orkney Islands boast stunning landscapes and sea views, providing residents with a refreshing environment. The islands offer ample opportunities for outdoor activities, from scenic walks to water sports and wildlife exploration.
Apart from its natural beauty, Orkney is rich in historical sites, including the renowned Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, Taversoe Tuick burial cairn, and the ancient Midhowe Broch tower house.
Russell Galley, the managing director at Halifax, commended Orkney’s quality of life, emphasizing the area’s strong education system, low crime rates, and residents’ high satisfaction levels. The Shetland Islands and the Western Isles, both in Scotland, also ranked among the top three locations for families in the UK.
