No10 has rejected the response from Elon Musk’s company, X, regarding the recent scandal involving sexual images, calling it disrespectful to victims of misogyny and sexual violence.
The tech billionaire’s social media platform has revealed that its AI chatbot, Grok, will now offer the creation of deepfakes as a premium feature. However, the government has criticized this move, emphasizing that it is not a sufficient solution and urging X to take more decisive actions. No10 has warned Musk that all possible measures are being considered to address the disturbing abuse.
Despite calls to cease using the platform, No10 has not committed to discontinuing its use. Grok has faced backlash for enabling users to produce fake images of unclothed individuals, including minors, without their consent.
A spokesperson for Keir Starmer expressed dissatisfaction with the introduction of a premium service that facilitates the generation of illicit images through AI technology. The spokesperson emphasized that the move is not a resolution and instead belittles the victims of misogyny and sexual violence. The Prime Minister’s stance is clear – X must act promptly to address the issue.
The spokesperson highlighted the need to prevent the creation of unlawful and reprehensible content on Grok and emphasized the importance of taking immediate action to achieve this goal.
The Labour Party is contemplating ending its usage of X following condemnations from the Prime Minister. Party chairwoman Anna Turley mentioned ongoing discussions within the party to ensure a safe online environment.
Acknowledging the serious concerns raised by Ofcom regarding the misuse of AI technology, the government is collaborating with the regulatory body to address the issue effectively. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has instructed Musk’s social media company to address the matter urgently and has extended her full support to Ofcom for any necessary enforcement actions against X or xAI.
Emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards offensive online content, Kendall stated that the UK will not tolerate the proliferation of abusive material and called for collective efforts to eradicate such content.
Grok users on X have reportedly prompted the generation of inappropriate images of children through the AI feature integrated into the platform. Grok’s acknowledgment of lapses in safeguards and its commitment to rectifying them to prevent illegal content, particularly child sexual abuse material, was highlighted in a recent post.
In response to concerns raised by Liz Kendall, Grok’s X account assured that they are enhancing safeguards to prevent harmful content and are dedicated to complying with regulations to ensure a safer online environment.
