NASA embarked on a new mission to explore key questions in astrophysics and cosmology by launching the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, a revamped spy satellite aimed at capturing expansive views of the cosmos. The approximately $4 billion project was lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., via a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket under clear skies just after sunrise. The telescope’s primary objective is to delve into cosmic mysteries such as dark energy and dark matter, analyze gravity on large scales, and seek out exoplanets, planets beyond our solar system.

The telescope will position itself in orbit beyond the moon to carry out its investigations. Originally intended for a spy satellite initiative managed by the National Reconnaissance Office, the telescope was repurposed for cosmic exploration after the program was terminated due to budget overruns. The telescope, named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, is set to travel to Lagrange Point 2, situated around 1.6 million kilometers from Earth.

Mission scientists will spend the next 90 days commissioning the telescope and preparing for its scientific operations. It is anticipated that the telescope will transmit its initial high-resolution images before the winter holidays. Roman aims to enhance the capabilities of existing orbiting observatories like the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope.

NASA administrator Jared Isaacman expressed confidence that Roman will achieve the same level of recognition as these renowned instruments of discovery. The telescope is expected to possess similar sensitivity and clarity as the Hubble but with the ability to survey the cosmos at a faster pace. During the launch event, U.S. President Donald Trump commended the mission, affirming continued financial support for NASA.

Roman’s unique ability to provide panoramic views will aid in understanding elusive cosmic elements like dark energy and dark matter by generating an extensive 3D map of the universe. Its comprehensive survey, spanning over two billion galaxies and expected to take more than a year to complete, will contribute significantly to unraveling these mysteries. Additionally, Roman will conduct an extensive search for exoplanets, potentially discovering thousands of new planets and offering insights into planetary systems resembling our own.
