Erin Patterson, dubbed the Mushroom killer, showed little reaction as she received a life sentence in court. Initially pleading not guilty to the murders of Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, Patterson was found guilty after a nine-week trial that included three murder charges and one attempted murder charge.
Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, survived after undergoing a liver transplant following the incident where Don, Gail, and Heather tragically died from consuming death cap mushrooms disguised in beef Wellingtons during a lunch on July 29, 2023.
Appearing at the Supreme Court of Victoria for sentencing on September 8, Patterson, dressed in a paisley top and tan jacket, appeared calm but blinked frequently as the court detailed her crimes. She sat between two guards in the courtroom, occasionally appearing drowsy throughout the sentencing.
After being handed a life sentence with a non-parole period of 33 years, Patterson will return to the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre for at least the next three decades. There are indications that she may be held in solitary confinement for her own safety.
She has until October 6 to appeal against her conviction or sentence. Meanwhile, Ian Wilkinson expressed gratitude to the police, especially the Homicide Squad and Detective Stephen Eppinstall, for their thorough investigation. He also thanked healthcare workers and services, emphasizing the importance of kindness in serving one another.
Additionally, Wilkinson acknowledged the Office of Public Prosecutions and Nanette Rogers for their expertise and dedication throughout the legal proceedings. He extended appreciation to the individuals worldwide who have shown support to his family and requested privacy for his family during their healing process.
