Labour Deputy Leader was not part of my plans for 2025, but it’s a significant honor that I now hold. It’s a crucial responsibility to occupy such a pivotal role within the Labour Party, especially given the current circumstances.
Labour Party members elected me for specific reasons. They seek a Deputy who can enhance Labour’s performance, convey a clearer vision of our values, and demonstrate whose interests we represent. They emphasize the importance of unity within the team, rather than engaging in divisive actions. I have pledged my dedication to both aspects.
The need to address pressing issues has never been more urgent. Life has become increasingly challenging for ordinary citizens over the past decade. Simply having a job is no longer sufficient to maintain a decent standard of living. The prospect of owning a secure and affordable home, particularly for the younger generation, is becoming more distant. Rapid changes in the labor market, coupled with global conflicts and migration, have direct implications for us domestically.
People across the UK are clamoring for change and a platform where their voices are heard by politicians who understand their concerns. It is imperative for the Labour Party to demonstrate that we are responsive to these demands. Failure to do so risks driving people towards deceptive promises and simplistic solutions. Effecting substantial changes to benefit ordinary citizens, public services, and the economy requires concerted effort, far beyond mere rhetoric.
To effectively convey this narrative and showcase that mainstream politics can deliver tangible results, we must remain committed, inclusive, and focused. It is critical to avoid self-absorption and blame games, and instead, engage in constructive actions.
For instance, the recent Budget reflected true Labour values. By implementing measures such as lifting half a million children out of poverty, funded by a mansion tax and fairer income taxes, the government is making a tangible difference. Additional initiatives like pay raises for low-wage workers, reduced energy bills, healthcare improvements, and enhanced education support underscore our commitment to serving the majority. A Labour-led government, under Keir Starmer’s leadership, prioritizes the many over the few.
While it can be frustrating when our message is overshadowed, cutting through the noise and amplifying our agenda becomes more challenging when internal conflicts are exposed publicly.
Looking ahead to early 2026, with significant Labour policies set to take effect, including enhanced sick pay, wage increases for low earners, improved rental conditions, public rail ownership, social housing initiatives, pension boosts, family support programs, and the eradication of zero-hours contracts, our focus must remain resolute. This is a unique opportunity that must not be squandered.
With major elections approaching in early 2026, it is crucial for all Labour supporters to rally behind Keir Starmer. To prevent the opposition, particularly Reform, from gaining control of councils or power bases in Wales and Scotland, we must unite and prioritize the national interest. As Labour, we owe it to the nation to present a united front, place the country above all else, and combat divisive politics and hatred effectively.
