King Charles humorously mentioned a past situation where he could have been “married off” to President Richard Nixon’s daughter during a speech at the grand state banquet in Windsor Castle, honoring Donald Trump. The King, in his address highlighting the strong UK-US relationship, recalled interacting with Tricia Nixon in 1970 at social events when he was 21 years old.
Reflecting on his admiration for the American people’s ingenuity and the democratic values of the US, the 76-year-old monarch emphasized the enduring bond between the British and American populations. Charles playfully remarked that had the media’s efforts in the 1970s been successful, he might have become part of the Nixon family through marriage.
President Nixon, who held office from 1969 until his resignation in 1974 amid the Watergate scandal, saw his daughter Tricia wed Edward Cox in 1971. In contrast, Charles later married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981.
During the banquet, attended by a gathering including Melania and Donald Trump, King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Kate, and other royals, the atmosphere was cordial. Prince William assisted Melania Trump in settling into her seat, while Princess Kate sat between Michael Bulous and Mr. Trump.
Mr. Trump, dressed in white tie, displayed a serious demeanor as he attentively listened to the King’s speech. He nodded in agreement as Charles expressed pride in his Scottish heritage and chuckled at the King’s mention of the excellence of British golf courses.
This event underscored the deep cultural connections and shared heritage between the UK and the US, as well as the warmth and camaraderie among the attendees at the royal banquet.
