Keir Starmer expresses solidarity with Denmark as concerns rise over potential plans by Donald Trump to claim Greenland. The US President’s interest in the Danish territory for national security reasons has sparked a strong reaction, with speculations about the White House’s intentions towards the island.

In a statement to the press, Starmer supported Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s decision to reject any US territorial claims on Greenland, emphasizing that the future of Greenland should be determined by Denmark and Greenland alone. Stressing the importance of Denmark as a European and NATO ally, he highlighted the significance of respecting the sovereignty of Greenland under the Kingdom of Denmark.

Trump’s remarks on the strategic value of Greenland and concerns over Russian and Chinese presence on the island have fueled the debate. When questioned about the implications of US actions in Venezuela for Greenland, Trump suggested that it was a matter for the involved parties to consider.

Danish PM Frederiksen firmly stated that Trump has no authority to annex Greenland and reminded him of the existing security agreements that provide the US with access to the region. She urged the US to refrain from threatening a close ally like Denmark, emphasizing the principle of respecting the self-determination of nations, as highlighted in a European Union statement regarding Venezuela.

Despite calls for clear opposition to any US intervention in Greenland, Home Office minister Mike Tapp refrained from making direct statements, citing the need for diplomatic discussions within NATO. While challenged by Sky News host Sophy Ridge on the matter, Tapp reiterated the importance of NATO cohesion and adherence to international laws in handling such situations.

Former Tory defense secretary Sir Ben Wallace underscored the need for the UK to support Denmark and NATO allies against any threats, urging a firm stance against the Trump administration’s actions. The ongoing discussions highlight the complexities and diplomatic considerations surrounding the situation.
