More than 30 million tons of litter are discarded in the UK annually, leading to visible eyesores in communities, environmental harm to wildlife, and an approximate clearing cost of £1 billion each year.
Fortunately, Keep Britain Tidy, an environmental charity, is organizing the Great British Spring Clean and Great Big School Clean from March 13 to 29. Hundreds of thousands of individuals are expected to participate in cleaning up streets.
Since its inception in 2016 as a one-time event, the initiative has garnered immense support from Litter Heroes who have collectively committed to picking up over 4.5 million bags of waste from various locations like streets, parks, fields, riverbanks, and beaches.
The Great British Spring Clean, scheduled for March 13-29, invites participants to register at keepbritaintidy.org and pledge to collect any number of bin bags they desire. Both individuals and groups can participate by providing basic details like name, email address, postcode, and the number of bags they intend to collect.
Last year, nearly 400,000 volunteers engaged in the annual cleanup, filling approximately 462,000 bags of litter. A survey revealed that 95% of participants believed their efforts significantly improved their local surroundings.
Among the supporters this year is civil servant Emdad Rahman, an inspirational Litter Hero Ambassador funded by People’s Postcode Lottery. Emdad promotes environmental stewardship through the Little Litter League, encouraging youth and families to take responsibility for their surroundings.
Joining him is Sarah Drakes, sustainability manager at Nestlé Confectionery UK&I, who has backed the Great British Spring Clean for six years. She emphasizes the importance of responsible waste management within the food and drink industry.
Partners like KFC UK&I, Mars Wrigley, and others have been instrumental in supporting the campaign, contributing to initiatives aimed at reducing littering and promoting community cleanliness.
The Great British Spring Clean presents an opportunity for individuals to make a positive impact on their communities by participating in the cleanup efforts. The initiative is made possible by the support of People’s Postcode Lottery, media partners, and various corporate sponsors.
