Iran’s anti-government protests have resulted in numerous casualties, with President Donald Trump issuing threats of military action if further civilian deaths occur. In a tragic turn of events, a shopkeeper has been condemned to death.

The unrest commenced in Tehran’s bazaars due to soaring inflation, leading to skyrocketing prices of essential goods and shortages on store shelves. The central bank’s decision to discontinue a program offering select importers access to discounted US dollars forced merchants to raise prices.

The turmoil has now engulfed all 31 Iranian provinces, with bodies littering the streets as the government acknowledges causing the deaths of over 2,000 individuals involved in the protests. Erfan Soltani, a 26-year-old, was apprehended in Fardis for his alleged participation in anti-government demonstrations. Despite lacking legal representation and a formal trial, he faces imminent execution by hanging.

Iran has seen a staggering 972 executions in 2024, dwarfing the US’s count of 25, as reported by United Against Nuclear Iran. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s regime, spanning over 35 years, has been marked by a heavy-handed approach, including the frequent use of the death penalty even during periods of relative calm. Human rights advocates express grave concerns over the government’s ruthless tactics to quell dissent and instill fear among the populace.

Fears loom large over the possibility of escalating state-sanctioned executions through public hangings, shootings, and brutal beatings, leading to mass casualties. Erfan’s impending fate suggests a grim public hanging, a method known for its prolonged agony and suffering, according to Iran Human Rights.

Human rights experts denounce public executions as a violation of international norms, emphasizing the inhumanity and arbitrariness of such practices. While stoning remains a sanctioned form of punishment, reports indicate a decline in its implementation since 2010, largely due to international pressure.

In a disturbing incident, the Center for Human Rights in Iran disclosed the harrowing ordeal of Payman Derafshan, a prominent legal figure, who resorted to self-harm after facing grave mistreatment while in custody.

Amidst the escalating crisis, locals express apprehension about potential military intervention following President Trump’s remarks. Iranian citizens voice a mix of despair and determination, with concerns over the future course of action and the resilience of the protest movement.
