Greenland has firmly responded to Donald Trump’s interest in acquiring the Arctic island, stating that they prefer to remain Greenlanders and make their own decisions. This comes after Trump’s remarks indicating that Greenland is crucial to US national security.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and other political leaders rejected Trump’s assertions, asserting that Greenland’s fate should be determined by its people alone. They emphasized the need for the United States to respect their sovereignty and not interfere in their internal affairs.
Trump has reiterated his intention to obtain Greenland for national security reasons, despite the strong opposition from Greenlanders and minimal support from Americans for a military takeover. European leaders, including France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Britain, and Denmark, have expressed solidarity with Denmark in defending Greenland’s autonomy.
Denmark has confirmed its military doctrine in response to a potential invasion, stating that troops would engage immediately without waiting for orders. Despite the escalating tensions, Greenland remains resolute in deciding its own future, with overwhelming rejection of becoming part of the US.
