A popular B&B and café that had won awards has sadly closed its doors, citing its challenging location as a key factor in the decision. The Dove Inn, a gluten-free establishment in Alburgh, Norfolk, shut down after operating for two and a half years under the ownership of Sonya Resemblance. The closure is part of a broader trend affecting the pub and hospitality industry in the UK, with many businesses facing financial difficulties due to increasing costs and changing consumer behaviors.

In a recent development, the well-loved White Horse pub in Beaconsfield permanently closed its doors, echoing the struggles faced by many establishments in the sector. Last year, pub owners raised concerns about the industry’s viability, pointing to significant cost hikes that led to the closure of hundreds of pubs in the first quarter of 2025 alone.

Despite receiving accolades such as being named one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards, the Dove Inn ultimately had to cease operations. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the business in 2023, served a menu entirely free of gluten, catering to individuals with dietary restrictions. The establishment also garnered recognition at the Luxlife Magazine Food and Drink Awards in Norfolk.

Expressing gratitude to patrons for their support, Sonya explained that the business had provided employment opportunities and social gatherings that promoted mental well-being. However, she acknowledged the challenges posed by the location, which ultimately contributed to the closure. Despite efforts to sustain the business, the decision to shut down was made public in mid-January, eliciting an outpouring of support from customers.

As the industry faces ongoing challenges, the closure of the Dove Inn serves as a reminder of the difficulties encountered by small businesses in the retail and hospitality sectors. While loyal customers expressed sadness over the closure, there remains hope for a potential return in the future.
