Fire TV Stick users need to exercise caution when installing new apps on their devices due to a recent development. The widely used tool known as “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, creating an opportunity for a fraudulent copycat app aimed at defrauding users.
The disappearance of Downloader from Amazon’s online marketplace was first noticed over the weekend. Downloader has been a long-standing tool for Fire TV owners, enabling them to search for and install apps not available through official channels for almost a decade.
Despite its popularity, Downloader faced a temporary suspension, as confirmed by its developer, Elias Saba. The issue arose when an update caused Amazon to flag Downloader as a full web browser, violating Amazon’s policy against third-party browsers on Fire TV devices.
In response to the suspension, Saba swiftly addressed the problem by releasing an update, version 2.0.2, removing the browser registration. He is optimistic that Amazon will approve the revised version soon, allowing Downloader to be reinstated in the Appstore.
During this period, users are advised to beware of a fake version of Downloader that has emerged, attempting to deceive Fire TV owners into making unauthorized payments. Saba warned against installing the fake app and urged users to report it to Amazon if encountered.
For users who already have the legitimate Downloader installed, it is recommended not to delete it, as reinstallation will not be possible until Amazon resolves the issue. Additionally, users should disable Auto Offload to prevent the device from automatically removing the app.
If Amazon greenlights the updated fix, Downloader may make a comeback on Fire TV devices in the coming week, but users should remain vigilant and monitor the situation closely for any updates.
