A former Russian Prime Minister has remarked on the significant impact of the UK and France’s commitment to deploying troops in Ukraine, causing uncertainty for Vladimir Putin.
Mikhail Kasyanov highlighted that this move by the coalition of willing nations has shifted the dynamics, leaving Putin at a crossroads. The announcement, following Keir Starmer’s statement on establishing military hubs in Ukraine, has put pressure on the Russian President to reconsider his stance.
Speaking on Times Radio, Mr Kasyanov emphasized the strategic shift made by the coalition in Paris, separating security guarantees for Ukraine from other issues. He noted the reinforcement of transatlantic unity and the alignment with the US, signaling a strong message to Putin.
The plan includes the construction of secure facilities for weapons and equipment to aid Ukraine’s defense efforts, with British and French troops scheduled to be stationed after a ceasefire agreement.
In response to Starmer’s proposal, a close associate of Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Rogozin, criticized the idea of hosting British troops in Ukraine, warning of potential repercussions such as missile strikes from Russia.
A critical development was the endorsement from Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, confirming US support for security guarantees and readiness to defend Ukraine if the peace is violated. The proposal outlines a multinational force led by European nations, potentially with US involvement, to ensure peace in Ukraine.
Keir Starmer expressed optimism about the united front presented by European and American allies in support of peace efforts in Ukraine, acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead.
