What was supposed to be a celebration of soccer at the World Cup draw turned into a disappointing display of one man’s political flattery.
As a supporter of MAGA, FIFA president Gianni Infantino had the opportunity to present his apparent idol, Donald Trump, with a newly created “Peace Prize” at the event held at the Kennedy Centre, just a mile away from the White House.
The audience was shocked by the overt admiration shown towards the US President, who was being honored for “peace” while actively involved in military actions near Venezuela and considering rewarding Vladimir Putin with parts of Ukraine for his invasion.
A video tribute to Trump played on large screens, followed by the presentation of a significant trophy with his name already inscribed. Infantino returned to the stage amid applause, declaring Trump as “the first recipient of the FIFA Peace Prize: Mr. Donald Trump”.
A gold medal was placed in Trump’s hands, which he promptly wore around his neck, followed by a certificate. The whole scene felt distasteful.
FIFA, once tainted by corruption scandals, now appeared to be serving as a global public relations tool for one of the world’s most polarizing figures.
Infantino, displaying excessive admiration, stood beside a president engaged in military actions and contributing to global unrest.
Trump delivered a few self-congratulatory remarks on stage, reveling in the moment as if he had received the Nobel Peace Prize rather than a hastily created award from the head of world football.
No mention was made of ongoing military actions, displaced civilians, or the irony of honoring “peace” amidst active conflicts.
Infantino shamelessly posed for a photo with Trump, while the leaders of Mexico and Canada distanced themselves, unwilling to be associated with the exaggerated display of mutual admiration.
Despite Infantino’s claims of FIFA being politically neutral, the relationship between him and Trump now appears inappropriate and excessive. The event was not a diplomatic gesture but a form of adulation.
The incident did not reflect values of football, unity, or sports’ ability to bridge gaps but rather showcased ego, power, and mutual flattery between two individuals using the world stage for personal ambitions.
Under the spotlight and amidst orchestrated applause, the beautiful game turned ugly, leaving global football fans to witness helplessly as the sport’s integrity was traded for a spectacle.
