England’s Mark Wood may face a prolonged absence due to injury, despite England’s strong performance in the Ashes. Joe Root’s exceptional unbeaten century propelled England to a commanding position on day one of the second Test match at The Gabba.

Root’s stellar 135 not out, his 40th Test ton, guided England to a total of 325-9, supported by Zak Crawley’s 76 and Jofra Archer’s 32 not out. While Australia had their moments, the day belonged to Ben Stokes’ team.

Wood, nursing a knee injury, initially ruled out for the second Test, might also miss the upcoming match in Adelaide. The pace bowler, speaking to Aussie broadcaster Channel 7, expressed uncertainty about his return before Christmas, hinting at a potential comeback in Melbourne or Sydney.

Wood, plagued by injuries throughout his career, made his first Test appearance in 15 months in Perth due to an elbow issue. Despite wearing a knee brace in Brisbane, Wood’s absence led to Will Jacks replacing him in the team.

Former England captain Michael Atherton highlighted Wood’s importance and the setback his injury poses to England’s pace strategy in the Ashes. Australia’s Mitchell Starc shone with 6-71 in response to Root’s brilliance.

The Ashes action, starting on November 21, can be watched live on TNT Sports via discovery+ or Prime Video’s TNT Sports channel. Stay updated with the latest Ashes news by signing up for The Cricket Drop newsletter.
