Tennessee has announced plans to rename Nashville International Airport in honor of the late country music legend Dolly Parton. The decision follows a social media campaign by fans to pay tribute to Parton after her recent passing at the age of 80. Governor Bill Lee, in collaboration with Parton’s team, has initiated the process to rename the airport as a fitting tribute to the beloved artist’s enduring legacy of music, generosity, faith, and kindness.

The proposal to rename the airport will be deliberated at a meeting on Sept. 17, considering the current policy that typically requires a two-year period after an individual’s passing before naming any property in their honor. The move has garnered support from Tennessee’s Department of Tourist Development, with Commissioner Mark Ezell recognizing Parton as a significant figure in promoting Tennessee’s tourism and culture to millions worldwide.

Dolly Parton, born on Jan. 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tenn., began her illustrious career at a young age, performing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and later becoming one of the best-selling female artists in music history. With iconic hits like “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You,” Parton’s musical contributions have left an indelible mark, earning her 11 Grammy Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award.
