A depraved murderer has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his estranged wife and desecrating her body.
Zarbab Ali, aged 29, received a life sentence with no chance of parole for the brutal slaying of Rachael Castillo, 25, with whom he had two children. Castillo had initiated divorce proceedings, which were near completion when Ali launched his deadly assault at her sister’s apartment where she and their sons were residing.
Ali took the children to his parents’ house and returned to the apartment knowing Castillo was alone. He entered, turned off the lights, and ambushed her in a dim hallway, stabbing her repeatedly. Following the murder, he wrapped her body in a blanket, attempted to clean the scene, then transported her in his car to Littlerock, California, where he buried her in a shallow grave.
Upon discovery of the crime scene by Castillo’s sister, law enforcement responded, finding bloody evidence nearby and witnesses identifying Ali’s presence. In a disturbing turn of events, Ali returned to violate Castillo’s remains, later confessing to this heinous act during police interrogation.
Castillo’s body was eventually located on November 13, 2022, in a remote desert area near Littlerock, leading to Ali’s arrest the same day. He pleaded guilty to various charges, including murder, unlawful mutilation, and sexual contact with human remains.
During the sentencing phase, heartfelt statements from Castillo’s family portrayed her as a cherished mother, sister, daughter, and friend with aspirations for her and her children. They condemned Ali’s cowardly actions, emphasizing the irrevocable impact on the innocent children left behind.
In the face of these tragedies, justice was served as Ali was condemned to a lifetime in prison without the possibility of release.
