New Cadillac test driver, Colton Herta, has officially announced his departure from IndyCar to venture into the Formula 2 grid next season. The move is driven by Herta’s pursuit of the FIA superlicence points necessary for potential future participation in Formula 1.
Herta’s anticipated transition to the Cadillac project aligns with the team’s origins as part of Andretti Global’s F1 expansion initiative. The team, under TWG Motorsports’ ownership, will establish the Cadillac F1 outfit, becoming the 11th contender in the sport starting next year.
Joining Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, Herta has been appointed as the official test driver for Cadillac despite falling short in the IndyCar championship standings this year. Notably, Cadillac’s preference for an American driver has strongly linked Herta to the role, leading to negotiations for his placement in the upcoming Formula 2 season to accrue the required superlicence points.
TWG chief executive, Dan Towriss, expressed confidence in Herta’s decision, emphasizing the risks involved in pursuing his Formula 1 ambition through the test and development driver position in F2. Towriss highlighted the differences in racing dynamics between IndyCar and F2, underscoring the challenges Herta faces in adapting to new tracks and tire strategies.
The FIA’s points system favors drivers competing in F2 for accumulating superlicence points, presenting a strategic advantage over IndyCar despite the latter’s status as a premier single-seater series in North America. Herta’s previous F1 aspirations were hindered by the superlicence requirements, with a rejected exemption request preventing his entry into the grid in 2022.
While Towriss hinted at a potential race seat for Herta in 2027 based on his F2 performance, he emphasized the need for Herta to prove his capabilities and earn the opportunity. The unconventional career move by Herta has garnered praise for his willingness to embrace discomfort and pursue his aspirations in Formula 1.
In a parallel industry development, Mick Schumacher declined a similar test driver role, opting for a future with McLaren in the World Endurance Championship. This decision positions Schumacher for a new chapter with McLaren’s anticipated participation in the WEC starting in 2027.
