Following the talks, Greer, in an exclusive interview with CBC News, described the meetings as “good” and “cordial.” He mentioned plans for discussions with the president and noted that Canadian officials would also engage with the prime minister.
Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, after the meeting, stated his commitment to continue the necessary work expected by Canadians. Without specifying a timeline, LeBlanc expressed readiness for as many meetings as required with Greer. Additionally, LeBlanc is scheduled to update the federal government’s Advisory Committee on Canada-U.S. Economic Relations on the negotiation progress. The committee plays a crucial role in developing strategies for Canada’s economic ties with the U.S.
Furthermore, LeBlanc is set to brief provinces on Friday, as disclosed by Quebec’s envoy for the review of the CUSMA, Louise Blais. Both LeBlanc and chief trade negotiator Janice Charette held discussions with Greer, marking the second meeting of the week between Canadian and American trade officials and the fourth within three weeks. The intensified discussions followed Trump’s threat to impose significant duties on numerous Canadian goods, in addition to existing sectoral tariffs, scheduled to take effect on August 19.
Charette continued talks with her counterpart late into the evening at the U.S. Trade Representative office post the afternoon meeting. Notably, Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are collaborating on a proposal to present to President Donald Trump before the looming tariff deadline. Sources mentioned that the Americans offered a new proposal aiming to reduce some sectoral tariffs, though not meeting Canadian expectations. Additionally, the U.S. is seeking preferential access to Canadian critical minerals, covering security and energy aspects.
The Canadian side has strongly conveyed to the Americans that proceeding with talks after the August 19 tariffs implementation would not align with Canadians’ interests. The tariffs are linked to various trade issues, including Canada’s response to U.S. trade policies impacting alcohol sales and alleged discrimination against U.S. vehicles and dairy. Industry sources suggest Canada is willing to address certain concerns by potentially lifting retaliatory tariffs on U.S. autos, ending booze bans, and making adjustments in the dairy sector.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed willingness to reintroduce U.S. alcohol if a fair deal safeguarding Ontario’s key sectors is reached. Ford emphasized that tariffs on Canada equate to taxing American citizens. He urged Americans to convey a message during the midterms. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette’s office also emphasized maintaining the alcohol ban until a fair agreement is reached. Quebec retains the authority over alcohol sales decisions.
