Canada’s foreign affairs minister has announced sanctions against five senior Iranian officials for their involvement in activities in the Strait of Hormuz that disrupt international peace. The minister emphasized the importance of freedom of navigation in the strait for global trade and energy security, urging Iran to de-escalate and adhere to international navigation rights.
The sanctions target individuals from the Islamic Republic of Iran, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), for actions that have posed threats to the critical international waterway. The officials sanctioned are Ali Abdollahi, Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Ebrahim Azizi, Shahram Irani, and Hamid Hosseini.
With these new sanctions, Canada has now imposed sanctions on a total of 232 individuals and 260 entities across Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors. These measures come amidst mounting pressure to resolve the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, as efforts to reach a peace agreement have so far been unsuccessful.
Since the conflict began in February, tensions have escalated with the U.S. and Iranian forces engaging in hostilities.
