Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps has released new photographs from the site of a tragic accident involving British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua. The agency has also provided a comprehensive account of the incident that claimed the lives of two other individuals.
Anthony Joshua was hospitalized after being extricated from the wreckage of the SUV he was traveling in with a driver and other passengers on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Nigeria on Monday morning. Reports indicate that a blowout caused the vehicle Joshua was in to veer off course and collide with a stationary truck.
Authorities in Ogun State are conducting an investigation into the incident, while the Federal Road Safety Corps has issued an update. The organization’s social media post on Monday, December 29, at 2:10 pm GMT showcased previously unseen images of the damaged SUV and the truck it crashed into.
The pictures depict officials at the scene alongside witnesses, with the rear of the truck cordoned off. In a series of statements, the FRSC confirmed the fatal crash involving Anthony Joshua and detailed the swift response by their operatives to rescue Joshua and the other individuals involved.
The FRSC revealed that the accident, which occurred near Sagamu, Ogun State, involved a Lexus Jeep carrying Anthony Joshua and a stationary truck. Tragically, two individuals lost their lives, one person sustained injuries, and two others escaped unscathed. Joshua, although injured, was rescued alive.
The FRSC emphasized that the vehicle carrying Joshua was speeding, leading to loss of control and the subsequent collision with the truck. They stressed the dangers of excessive speed and dangerous overtaking, urging motorists to adhere to traffic regulations for road safety.
The statement extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a speedy recovery. It emphasized the importance of obeying traffic laws, especially on high-speed roads like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Ogun State authorities confirmed that the two deceased individuals were foreign nationals. Anthony Joshua has not made any public statements following the accident, and his exact location in the hospital remains undisclosed by officials.
