Grace Stelmachowicz, a resident of Squamish, B.C., shared her journey of deviating from the traditional path to success. Raised with the belief that success meant pursuing higher education, landing a job in your chosen field, getting married, buying a house, and starting a family, Grace found herself on a different trajectory in 2016.

Instead of securing a summer engineering job as planned, Grace ended up working at a horseback trail riding outfit in Banff National Park. Despite this deviation from her initial career plan, she embraced the opportunity to explore the Rockies on horseback, fulfilling her childhood dream of riding in the mountains. This experience taught her to appreciate life’s simple pleasures, from quiet mornings to warming up by the fire after a long day’s work.

Through seasonal work, Grace formed deep and lasting friendships with like-minded individuals who were also taking unconventional career paths. These connections, cultivated during intense months of shared experiences, enriched her life in ways she had not experienced through traditional avenues. While bidding farewell to these friends after each season was tough, the bonds forged during their time together remained strong.

Despite initial skepticism from her family about her non-traditional career choices, Grace’s journey through seasonal work ultimately led her to a fulfilling career in international sales, where she continues to travel and explore the world. Reflecting on her evolution from an engineering graduate to a seasoned trail guide, Grace values the self-reliance, problem-solving skills, and confidence gained through her unconventional career path.

Although her current career may not align with her family’s expectations, Grace is content with the life she has built by following her passion. She encourages others to step out of their comfort zones, explore new opportunities, and embrace the unpredictability of life, as she believes that true fulfillment comes from chasing dreams and finding joy in the journey.
