A young man who provided ecstasy pills that led to the death of his teenage girlfriend has been sentenced to prison. Lennix Hughes, aged 16, passed away after consuming the Class A drug at a gathering. She had been supplied the pills by her then 18-year-old boyfriend, Jay Conway. The tragic incident occurred at a house party in Dundee, Scotland, where Hughes was rushed to Ninewells Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to the drug’s effects.
Now 21, Conway was visibly emotional as he received a 15-month jail term for supplying the drug that resulted in Hughes’ fatal overdose. In addition to this charge, the apprentice plumber confessed to selling Class B cannabis over a period of more than two months, with his operation being described as “somewhat sophisticated” during court proceedings.
Evidence presented in court detailed how Miss Hughes perished after ingesting MDMA wraps provided by Conway at his residence in March 2023. Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith expressed empathy for the family’s loss and acknowledged the gravity of the situation. Despite recognizing the moral responsibility Conway bears, the sentencing was based on legal grounds. The court emphasized that custodial punishment was appropriate, given the circumstances, although it was noted that if Conway were older, the penalties would have been more severe.
Conway, a resident of Dundee, was found to be running a drug operation involving encrypted communication devices and negotiating discounted rates for buying cannabis in bulk, as reported by the DailyRecord. Following a police search of his residence, which yielded cash, weighing scales, and grinders, Conway’s involvement in cannabis distribution was confirmed. He had purchased MDMA in powdered form and arranged a gathering with friends for a drug-using session, during which Miss Hughes was later invited to participate.
A subsequent autopsy revealed a significant amount of MDMA and other substances in Miss Hughes’ system, with four wraps of the drug discovered in her stomach at the time of her death. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with drug abuse and the devastating consequences that can result.
