A large black bear, identified as Yellow 2120, took up residence beneath a Los Angeles home for over a month, causing damage to gas lines and bricks. Efforts by state wildlife officials using air horns and paintball guns proved ineffective, leading the homeowner to seek help from the BEAR League, a California non-profit specializing in coexisting with bears.
The BEAR League successfully evicted the bear by strategically encouraging it to leave the property. The homeowner, Ken Johnson, expressed relief at the swift resolution, which involved installing an electric shock mat at the bear’s entry point. The bear, weighing over 500 pounds, was captured on video returning to the house, stepping on the mat, and then fleeing.
Johnson, who faced significant damage to his property, highlighted the challenges of dealing with the aftermath while recovering from a past wildfire-related job loss. Despite previous unsuccessful attempts to deter the bear, including using noise-making devices and improvised alarms, Johnson felt defeated until the BEAR League intervened.
After the eviction, the bear briefly returned to the property before moving on. Johnson, who found the bear’s presence unsettling, has since expressed relief at the situation being resolved. The bear’s departure marked the end of a prolonged ordeal for the homeowner, who had exhausted various methods to address the issue.
